26 Feb Reverend orders ‘hands off other people’s spouses’ Rev Fr. Kato of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Makindye, Uganda was dismayed when he discovered that none of his faithful worshippers sat next to their wives or husbands during mass.
The priest was preaching on the theme of loving one another and family togetherness in celebration of Christ’s love.
Before he began his sermon, he asked all the couples who were seated together to put their hands up. To his dismay, not a hand went up, although there was a good mix of men and women in the congregation.
The visibly disappointed priest wondered how people can claim to love their families when they do not walk together, attend service together or even sit together. “Why are you ashamed of your wives or husbands?” he asked the men in the congregation.
Rev Fr. Kato has now imposed a ban on hand-shaking as a peace gesture during Catholic masses. He has declared that the peace gesture will be a reserve for married people sitting together. “Why should you shake hands with another man’s wife?” he asked the congregation.
