05 June Clinton pledges to support Obama Hillary Clinton, who lost the race for Democratic Party nomination for presidential candidate, to Barack Obama, (pictured) has finally agreed to bury the hatchet and support her rival in his bid to become the first black US president.
Clinton said in a letter on Thursday, that she was drawing the curtain on a gruelling 16-month nominating fight that badly split the Democratic Party.
Clinton, who polled 1,919 delegates against Obama’s 2,154 delegates, will publicly back Obama on Saturday and pledge to work for party unity in the general-election race against Republican John McCain. The winner needed to reach 2118 to seal the nomination.
"On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy," the New York senator and former first lady said in a letter to her backers.
"I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise."
Obama has already announced a three-member panel to look for a presidential running mate. It includes Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John Kennedy, former deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and Jim Johnson who performed the same selection task for John Kerry in 2004.
Obama has paid tribute to Clinton and hinted that she would play a role in any future Obama administration. Clinton has said she would be "open" to the idea of being Obama's vice-presidential running-mate.
